Slow Living Getaway in Denmark

July 26, 2017

After visiting Copenhagen, we wanted to have a little break. We needed a getaway, quiet and close to the beach. We chose the Denmark western coast. Denmark in itself appeared to us as a peaceful country. Almost everywhere we went we found a quiet place, simple landscape soothing the eye, little noise except the sea and the wind. It was the perfect place to, indeed, deeply REST!

We met Vikings along the road in Denmark

On our way from Copenhagen to Thyborøn, we visited the “Land of Legends” near Lejre. It’s a historic place, beautifully organized around the story of the Vikings. Several small villages can be found along a walk in the countryside, retracing the evolution of the Viking houses. This place is perfect for families because you can enjoy many activities organized for children. But for everyone, it’s a lovely way to discover a little bit (more) about European people history.

Two Small Viking Villages in Denmark

Thyborøn for a getaway in Denmark

This is the village we chose to stay for few days. We had the perfect Airbnb host to make this possible. When you are visiting, it’s somehow less important to be in a place that suits your taste and needs. You don’t spend that much time at home. But when you want to have quiet time, it’s important to feel at home away from home.

We had a great time enjoying Max’s and his wife house. We highly recommend the place. It can accommodate up to 10 guests with its 5 bedrooms. It’s perfect for a large family; everyone can have her/his bedroom and enjoy a good sleep.

There is a Spar grocery store less than 15min away walking. The house is situated on the street along the beach and is few meters away from a walking path. This path offers two routes, a 4km one and an 11km one. But the beach is also perfect for walking and is uninterrupted for 150km going south!

You’ll also have few places to visit such as the lovely shell house (Sneglehuset), the Aquarium or the Fishery Museum. When you want to enjoy local products, go to “De Røde Barakker – Mallemukken” a restaurant where there are fresh fish and seafood of the day on the menu.

You’ll find some more thing to do and enjoy in this village, nothing big of course, but perfect activities to have a Slow Living experience.

Thyborøn surroundings

If you want to go further, you have many over villages less than 30min drive away. Enjoy the countryside in itself; it’s offering beautiful views. We loved Lemvig. It’s a lovely little town with a fishing port and a small marina. Who says fishing port says fresh fish. You’ll be able to find some at Bjarnes Fisk. You’ll be seduced by the smell of sea products freshly prepared right when you step in their shop, as it’s also a restaurant.

Vestergade, a pedestrian street, is offering several quality shops between the typical Lemvig Kirke (church) and the waterfront.

Lemvig also has several grocery stores where you’ll find Scandinavian products at a lower price. Rema 1000 is one of them. Fun fact here, ReMa stands for Reitan (Odd Reitan is the founder) Mat (product) 1000 because they offer only 1000 products on their stalls. It’s a Norwegian company. They now provide much more than 1000 products, but they wouldn’t change their name accordingly.

What to expect

As I said earlier, you will not find high excitement there. But then it wouldn’t be a Slow Living retreat! You will find a quiet life and lots of rest. Quality time with your family and your loved ones. You will find a time, time for yourself, time to enjoy the moment. That may not be a number one for general travel guides, but that is a 5-star destination in the art of Slow Travelling.
